Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) expands its renowned lineup of servers1 by introducing 13 advanced next-generation Dell PowerEdge servers, designed to elevate performance and reliability for robust computing across core data centers, expansive public clouds, and edge locations.
The new generation of rack, tower, and multi-node PowerEdge servers, equipped with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, integrates Dell software and engineering innovations, such as the groundbreaking Smart Flow design, to enhance energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The enhanced Dell APEX capabilities empower organizations to adopt an as-a-Service approach, facilitating more efficient IT operations that optimize compute resources while mitigating risks.
“Enterprises seek easily manageable yet sophisticated and efficient servers with cutting-edge capabilities to drive their mission-critical workloads,” stated Jeff Boudreau, President and General Manager of Infrastructure Solutions Group at Dell Technologies. “Our next-generation Dell PowerEdge servers introduce unparalleled innovation that redefines standards in power efficiency, performance, and reliability, all while simplifying the implementation of a Zero Trust approach for enhanced security throughout IT environments.”
The new Dell PowerEdge servers are strategically designed to accommodate diverse demanding workloads, ranging from artificial intelligence and analytics to large-scale databases. Building upon the advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, the expanded portfolio unveiled in November 2022 includes the PowerEdge XE family, which features servers equipped with NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and the comprehensive NVIDIA AI Enterprise software suite, creating a robust stack for a complete AI platform.
Revolutionizing Cloud Service Provider Servers
Dell introduces the PowerEdge HS5610 and HS5620 servers tailored to cloud service providers overseeing expansive, multi-vendor data centers. These two-socket servers, available in both 1U and 2U form factors, offer optimized solutions. Equipped with cold aisle serviceable configurations and Dell Open Server Manager, an OpenBMC-based systems management solution, these servers streamline multi-vendor fleet management.
Elevated Performance and Streamlined Management
The next-generation PowerEdge servers deliver enhanced performance, exemplified by the Dell PowerEdge R760. This server leverages 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with Intel Deep Learning Boost and Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions, offering up to 2.9 times greater AI inferencing performance. The PowerEdge R760 also enhances VDI user capacity by up to 20%3 and boasts over 50% more SAP Sales & Distribution users on a single server compared to its predecessor4. By integrating NVIDIA Bluefield-2 data processing units, PowerEdge systems efficiently cater to private, hybrid, and multicloud deployments.
The ease of server management is further enhanced with the following improvements:
Dell CloudIQ: Integrating proactive monitoring, machine learning, and predictive analytics, Dell software provides a comprehensive overview of servers across all locations. Updates include enhanced server performance forecasting, select maintenance operations, and new virtualization visualization.
Dell ProDeploy services: The Dell ProDeploy Factory Configuration service delivers ready-to-install PowerEdge servers, preconfigured with the customer’s preferred software and settings. The Dell ProDeploy Rack Integration service provides pre-racked and networked PowerEdge servers, ideal for data center expansions and IT modernization.
Dell iDRAC9: Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) enables increased server automation and intelligence, making Dell systems easier to deploy and diagnose. This feature incorporates updated elements such as Certificate Expiry Notice, Telemetry for Dell Consoles, and GPU monitoring.
Designed with Sustainability in Focus
Prioritizing sustainability, Dell PowerEdge servers offer a 3x performance boost compared to the 14th Generation PowerEdge servers launched in 2017. This advancement translates to reduced floor space requirements and more potent, energy-efficient technology across all next-gen systems5. Key highlights include:
Dell Smart Flow design: A component of the Dell Smart Cooling suite, the Smart Flow design enhances airflow and reduces fan power by up to 52% compared to previous generation servers6. This feature supports superior server performance while demanding less cooling power, promoting more efficient data centers.
Dell OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager 3.0 software: Customers can optimize efficiency and cooling goals, monitor carbon emissions, and set power caps up to 82% faster to manage energy consumption. The enhanced sustainability target tool allows customers to assess server use, virtual machine and facility energy consumption, leak detection for liquid cooling systems, and more.
Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT): Four next-gen Dell PowerEdge servers are designated with the EPEAT silver label, and 46 systems bear the EPEAT bronze designation. The EPEAT ecolabel, a prominent global designation, highlights responsible purchasing decisions in the technology sector.
“Today’s modern data center requires continuous performance improvements for complex workloads such as AI, ML, and VDI,” noted Kuba Stolarski, Research Vice President at IDC Enterprise Infrastructure Practice. “As data center operators endeavor to keep up with the demand from these resource-hungry workloads, they must also prioritize environmental and security goals. With its new Smart Flow design, coupled with enhancements to its power and cooling management tools, Dell offers organizations significant improvements in efficient server operation alongside the raw performance gains in its newest generation of servers.”
Emphasizing Reliability and Security
The next-gen PowerEdge servers expedite the adoption of Zero Trust within organizational IT environments. These devices continuously verify access, assuming every user and device poses a potential threat. At the hardware level, silicon-based hardware root of trust, including Dell Secured Component Verification (SCV), ensures supply chain security from design to delivery. Furthermore, multifactor authentication and integrated iDRAC verify user identities before granting access.
A secure supply chain further facilitates the Zero Trust approach. Dell SCV provides cryptographic verification of components, extending supply chain security to the customer’s site.
Delivering a Scalable, Modern Computing Experience
For customers seeking operational expense flexibility, PowerEdge servers can be consumed as a subscription through Dell APEX. By utilizing advanced data collection and processor-based measurement by the hour, customers can adopt a flexible approach to manage compute needs without incurring the costs of over-provisioning.
Later this year, Dell Technologies will expand its Dell APEX portfolio to offer bare metal compute services on-premises, at the edge, or in colocation facilities. These services will be available through a predictable monthly subscription and can be easily configured through the APEX Console. This offering empowers customers to address their workload and IT operational needs with scalable and secure compute resources.
“4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors have the most built-in accelerators of any CPU on the market to help maximize performance efficiency for real-world applications, especially those powered by AI,” said Lisa Spelman, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Intel Xeon Products. “With the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge servers, Intel and Dell continue our strong collaboration in delivering innovations that create real business value, while incorporating leading scalability and security that customers require.”
