Lenovo has new servers for Intel’s new Xeons. The 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed “Sapphire Rapids” are out. With that, Lenovo has updated a number of its servers with the new processors. This is part of Lenovo’s ThinkSystem V3 generation of servers. Technically, Lenovo launched its Intel Sapphire Rapids, AMD EPYC Genoa and Chinese Arm servers back in September of 2022. Still, the company is formally announcing the new models again for Intel’s launch.
New Lenovo ThinkSystem Servers with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Launched
Lenovo has a number of new servers. These include:
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 V3 – This is Lenovo’s mainstream 1U dual socket Sapphire Rapids server
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 V3 – Based on a similar platform as the SR630 V3, this is a 2U variant that adds more storage and expansion capabilities due to the increased rack height. Somewhat strange is that Lenovo has 1U liquid-cooled servers that it calls the SR650 V3 DWC and SR650-I V3.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 V3 is the company’s 2U 4-socket server.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR860 V3 is also a 4-socket server but is designed to be a 4U chassis with more expansion capabilities than the SR850 V3.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR950 V3 is an 8-socket server that occupies 8U, looking more like two 4-socket 4U systems cabled together. We have already seen 8-socket servers from other vendors, but this one Lenovo says will be coming in the future. Even though it will be late to launch this platform compared to other vendors, the scale-up 8-socket market is slow to move so this is likely OK for most of Lenovo’s customers.
Final Words
Lenovo has a fairly conservative portfolio of Intel Sapphire Rapids Xeon servers. Lenovo tends to have heavy customizations to its base platforms to build things like storage solutions. We will likely take a look at its Sapphire Rapids servers on STH. We actually had some Lenovo ThinkSystem V2 servers that we were evaluating to deploy in the STH hosting infrastructure since, about a year ago, they were selling new for less than the list price of CPUs. We decided not to deploy them, but that is a story for another day. We will likely take a look at the V3 versions as well.
